I had a Dream of getting into a good job in a good company when i came to US. After searching for a long time and getting many rejects, I landed up in a dream job. I want to share my experience in getting a job, so you would be aware of it, when searching for a job
Job search:
Do's
1) Career fair and College career website are the prime source of getting a interview call
2) Customize your resume and cover letter for each company and each position. Have your work experience highlighted (this is the most important stuff the interviewers will look for)
3) Mail the recruiters if their contact id is provided
4) Do maintain a clean Facebook and LinkedIn profile (most of the recruiters search for this)
5) Target the companies which are local to you or your state.
6) Do human networking. Ask your friends which company are recruiting and apply to them in first priority
7) Do upload in monster, Dice, indeed, simply hired . Try editing them once in 2 days. so your resume will stay on top. (Try using 2 page resume in these sites)
8) I feel craigslist is the top one in getting calls in these sites. Apply to it regularly. there will be lots of immediate requirement
Dont's
1) Dont waste time in applying to all the companies. I applied to above 2000 companies but of no use.
2) dont use a standard format for a cover letter. try making a new one in every time.
Interview preparation:
1) prepare atleast 2 hrs a day even if u dont have any interviews.
2) do human networking, search in the net, careercup.com for the interview qns.
3) browse about the company and get to know about them and their products.(to speak with the interviewer)
During Interview:
1) b4 going to interview have little water and light food, sleep well in the night. dont go with empty stomach. Neat dress and tie
2) let ur mind relax.
3) give a firm handshake
4) see the eyes of the interviewer and speak
5) dont ever argue.
6) dont interrupt the interviewer while he is speaking. After he finishes, take a pause and then speak.
7) acknowledge the interviewer whenever he speaks.
8) interview is about selling yourself, so be polite, speak how u suit to the position and benefit to the company rather than speaking about yourself.
9) Do ask some questions at the end. (Dont ask any personal questions)
10) if u r supposed to have a lunch, socialize well.
11) avoid saying 'no', 'i dont know' . try to speak positively as much as u can
common questions asked:
Explain any one of ur projects.
why do you like that.
